What is depression?

Depression is a type of mental illness that makes a person feel sad and unable to enjoy previously enjoyable things. This is a brain disease that generally occurs in response to stress in susceptible individuals. Depression can affect anyone irrespective of their age, gender, economic status, religious views, etc. Besides feeling sad, a person who is depressed may have some or all of the following symptoms.

  • They no longer enjoy or care about doing the things they used to enjoy
  • They feel down, hopeless, helpless, or cranky most of the day, almost every day
  • They sleep too much or too little
  • They overeat ( stress eaters) or eat too little
  • They can notice a significant and unintentional weight change
  • They sleep too much or too little
  • They feel tired or complain of having no energy most of the days
  • They feel guilty or worthless
  • They can feel forgetful of things or feel confused
  • In deep depression, they can think about death or suicide

To diagnose a person with depression above symptoms should be present for at least 2 or more weeks.

Can Depression be treated? 

Yes, depression can be treated with counseling/ psychotherapy ( talk therapy), changing some unhealthy behaviors, and proper use of medications. Depending on the type and severity of depression, talk therapy, and medications can be used together or individually.

What is the treatment of depression or Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)?

Treatment of depression can vary from person to person, depending on severity, duration, and several other factors. Broadly treatment can be divided into 2 categories

  • Medication Management
  • Non medication management

People with mild depression can get better by talking to a counselor. People with moderate to severe depression may need a combination of both medication and counseling.

How long it takes for depression to get better? 

This also depends on several factors, and not one size fits all. Still, usually, people who take medicines start feeling better within 2-3 weeks, but sometimes it can take 4 to 6 weeks.

Many people who see a counselor or talk therapist start to feel better within few weeks, but it might take longer in some individuals( 8 to 10 weeks).

Why some people feel Suicidal or do not want to live anymore?

One of the most common reasons for feeling suicidal is untreated or poorly treated Major Depressive Disorder ( MDD). If someone feels suicidal or does not want to live anymore, he should call their doctor or emergency services immediately to seek help.

One who feels suicidal should immediately do one of these things

  • Can call or see their doctor or therapist
  • Call 9-1-1
